Paulo Oliveira, someone who crossed my path that has given the saying “Never Give Up” a new meaning. Every day someone’s dreams or passion for something dies because of a tragic event that entered their lives. When such an ever entered Paulo’s live his passion only got stronger.
Paulo, a 30-year-old Portuguese male with the title of qualified structural engineer behind his name has always loved gaming to the utter most. He’s been together with his fiance’ Candice for 5 years and in that time they’ve built a great little family. Having two Jack Russel’s, Ivy and Snoopy with a dwarf rabbit named Speedy Gonzales. They also have 3 hedgehogs that indicate Paulo’s love for gaming with names like Sonic, Knuckles, and Clover.
But what separates Paulo from the typical gamer, he had a severe stroke. On the 28th of September 2015 he was driving back to JHB from Secunda where he had attended a site meeting, and on his way, his car collided with a truck. Paulo was air lifted to Netcare Union Hospital and the paramedics resuscitated him twice on the way to the hospital. Paulo had a fractured humerus, a dislocated elbow, a fractured hip and +- 10cm of bone missing from his femur. Multiple blood transfusions had to be done and Paulo was on ventilation for 20 days before he could breathe by himself again. After 5 days in ICU Paulo suffered from a stroke which resulted in him now having aphasia and muscle weakness on his right side. Since then 15 operations has been performed on him.
Throughout the entire experience, Paul thought he would never be able to live a normal life yet game even. Being now left handed Paulo had to change how he does everyday tasks.
When we asked Paulo what kept him going his answer was amazing. “What kept me going from the accident till now was the support of my fiancé and my parents and that I needed to be here for them and my pets. I strongly believe that life is too short not to live it to the fullest, no matter what obstacles we are faced with. I believe God saved me for a reason.”
Paulo started his own YouTube channel to inspire others and that having disabilities should just motivate you more to never give up on your dreams and passions because where there is a will there’s always a way. At the moment the channel focuses on his journey to learn to play GTA 5 with a mouse (left hand) and a foot pedal (left foot) since he can’t use his right hand for the keyboard or a controller. He chose GTA 5 since it’s a large game and loads of fun. In the future, Paulo wants to do more missions and become an inspirational figure.
To all who reads this Paulo says “I’ve been down many times before but you have to push through and know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.”
