Young and praising the Lord

The gospel industry is an industry that’s growing very rapidly, we see new artists surfacing every now and then, but let me tell me you where the real talent is. Ntokozo Khumalo is a young man that despite the different genres that young people prefer, he chose to worship the Lord. Ntokozo is an uprising musician from the East Rand, Katlehong. He was born in Tembisa, moved to Mpumalanga for 5 years then moved to Katlehong. He comes from a musical family, where both his brothers and his sister sing.

Ntokozo is a self-taught pianist, there was an organ in his house when he was growing up, nobody could teach him so he used to press it and play it until it made sense and he started making beautiful and melodious music. He started by playing the piano then singing came after that, he says he always knew he could sing but he just didn’t embrace it, because he was into playing his piano but as time went by he grew into loving singing. To show that he’s a real musician who loves music, he can play both the bass guitar and drums as well.

Ntokozo does other genres as well, namely Afro-pop, Afro-Jazz and is looking into doing house music, but he says he would choose gospel music on any given day, because gospel music fulfills him, excites him and brings joy in his heart. “I’m a Gospel Kat,” that’s how he refers to himself when explaining the love he has for gospel music. He has sung back up for big artists like Mkhululi Bhebhe, Nobathembu, Sbusiso ‘Sbu Noah” Mthembu, Bobo Nzima and Mnqobi Nxumalo, but he would most definitely like to work with his role model, whom he talks fond of, Kirk Franklin and The Walls. Had he not been a musician he was going to be a fashion designer. Most musicians don’t have the support they need from their family members, but Ntokozo says his family supports him and they helped shape the artist that he is today, which is important for all artists, because support and love is very important for them and to them. When asked if he’s entered any competitions before he said “no, but I’d win if I entered one because I’m good.”

Ntokozo is going to host a live DVD recording on the 5th of November this Saturday, it will feature upcoming and blessed youth like Tshepang Mphuti, Khaya Sibanyoni, Bafana Mazibuko and a lot more. His reason behind this live recording is not for people to recognise him, but because he believes in doing something for yourself not because you want money or recognition, but to fulfil yourself.
