You know when someone walks into a room and you just feel their presence? That’s Rodney Luke Prins, confident, compassionate, and proudly authentic. As a finalist for Mr. Gay Nation SA 2025, Rodney isn’t just stepping into the spotlight, he’s owning it, and using it to inspire others.
“I’m absolutely thrilled and honored to be a finalist,” Rodney says, beaming. “I entered this competition to challenge myself, to step outside my comfort zone, and to proudly represent the LGBTQIA+ community with heart and authenticity.”
For Rodney, this moment is more than a title. It’s a symbol of growth, of all the late nights, self-doubt, and brave steps it took to get here. “Being named a finalist feels surreal. It’s a reminder that when you show up as your true self, amazing things can happen.”
But Rodney’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Coming out, he says, was like a rollercoaster, unpredictable, scary, and ultimately freeing. “The world doesn’t always make space for people like us. But through that journey, I found resilience, self-love, and a kind of freedom I didn’t know was possible.”
He credits his support system, friends, family, and chosen family, for helping him stay grounded. “Not everyone has that, and I never take it for granted. That’s why I want to be a safe space for others who are still figuring it all out.”
Rodney is on a mission to challenge common misconceptions about LGBTQIA+ pageants. “People think it’s all about looks or glam, and while we do love a bit of sparkle, it’s actually about leadership, visibility, and making a real impact. It’s a platform for purpose.”
His message to young queer South Africans is as heartfelt as it is empowering: “You are loved. You are worthy. And you are more than enough. Don’t let the world shrink you. Take up space. Shine. And never let anyone dull your sparkle.”
When asked what he’d say to his younger self, Rodney smiles and pauses. “I’d say: Be patient. Be kind to yourself. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Your light doesn’t need to be dimmed to make others comfortable. You are enough, exactly as you are.”

Advocacy is more than a passion for Rodney, it’s part of his DNA. He’s especially vocal about mental health, LGBTQIA+ rights, and access to education. “Far too many in our community suffer in silence. I want to be a voice that says, ‘You matter. You’re not alone. Healing is possible.’”
So how does he stay confident and grounded in a world that pushes conformity? “I focus on self-care, I protect my peace, and I stay close to people who love the real me. Confidence isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being authentically you.”
Outside of the pageant world, Rodney is all about life’s little joys. He loves music, deep conversations, laughing until it hurts, and the occasional glass of wine. “Lately I’ve really gotten into fitness, it’s been huge for my mental and emotional health. It keeps me balanced.”
When it comes to masculinity, Rodney is all about breaking the mold. “True masculinity isn’t about how tough you are, it’s about how real you are. It’s about being empathetic, vulnerable, and kind. We need to leave the toxic expectations behind and just be human.”
If he’s crowned Mr. Gay Nation SA, Rodney already knows his first big move: mental health advocacy. “I want to launch check-in spaces, a dedicated helpline, and host healing workshops. We need more safe spaces where people can feel heard, seen, and supported. Mental health matters, and it’s time we treat it that way.”
Rodney Luke Prins is not just a finalist, he’s a force. A proud voice. A heart-led leader. And most importantly, a reminder to us all that living boldly and authentically is the most powerful thing we can do.
