Gerhard Janse van Vuuren, the man behind TOKYO DRIFT, the latest attraction at The Hillfox Center.
It won’t be a surprise if you’ve seen groups gather at Hillfox to stare with amazement as lovers of everything motor, speed and drift around on trikes. However, these aren’t your typical trike! These are Drift Trikes! Engineered and designed to be the ideal piece of motoring equipment for drifting. After visiting the track in person we just had to arrange a quick interview with Gerhard and find out the big WHY? Why did you decide to introduce such an interesting sport to South Africa?
“Growing up I would go visit my uncle during school holidays and he would teach me the ins and outs of car mechanics. As I got older I built a go-kart to share with my friends. It was a race, break, fix and repeat situation. I loved every second of it. One day I saw an odd-looking trike slide around on a track, and as it went around the corner and it drifted, my mind was completely blown! From that moment I knew I had to have one!
Job security in South Africa is truly not great and I wanted to merge income and passion together. One day doing shopping with my wife, I looked at Hillfox’s parking lot area and said, this would be a great place to open a drift track! To my surprise, she agreed with the idea and loved my enthusiasm. In a blink of an eye, we jumped on the drifting train and got going on this venture. This was all 2 weeks from opening day and a hell of a lot had to be done to get things going, but as soon as the first customer got off from his first drifting session, everything was worth it after the words “ that was the most fun thing I have ever done in my life and I want to go again! ”
I want to give everyone that very same feeling! I want them to experience an affordable way of drifting, and also introduce kids into the drifting sport. Drift trikes have been around for some time now but it’s a new thing here in South Africa. Interest is picking up rapidly though and my vision for the future is huge! Trike drifting will soon be a full-on sport with drift weekends where a panel of judges will select a winner based on style, accuracy and speed.”
Gerhard is without a doubt expanding as we speak. Currently TOKYO DRIFT, can be fount at Hillfox on weekends. However, it’s also a mobile operation, meaning you can book TOKYO DRIFT for your event, fun day, festival or even bachelor party!
