Mmathapelo Mojela: A Journey of Faith, Family, and Music

Mmathapelo Mojela’s life is deeply intertwined with music, faith, and family—a journey that has shaped her into the inspiring gospel artist she is today. Hailing from the village of Ga Molapo in Limpopo, Mmathapelo’s musical roots run deep, growing up in a family of talented musicians. Her mother, known by the stage name Mama Winnie, is a celebrated queen of kwasakwasa, a genre that brought her to the forefront of South African music. Mmathapelo’s younger sister, Dezry Kay, is making waves internationally as the “Limphop Queen,” dominating the East African music scene with her unique sound. Mmathapelo is also the sister of rapper and media personality Daniel Kekana, further emphasizing her family’s rich musical legacy.

For Mmathapelo, however, gospel music was always her calling. From a young age, she found her voice in church, guided by the nurturing encouragement of her grandmother. Attending services together, her grandmother recognized the raw talent in Mmathapelo’s voice and fostered her love for singing. It was in those early years that her deep faith in God began to bloom, and her belief in the power of prayer became the cornerstone of her life and music.

A devoted member of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC), Mmathapelo’s spirituality flows naturally into her gospel creations. She is unashamed to infuse her music with the sounds of her passionate prayers, connecting deeply with those who share her faith. Her music is a reflection of her journey with God, her struggles, and her triumphs, and she has made it her mission to inspire others through song.

In 2007, Mmathapelo recorded her first album, Tshepo Yaka (My Hope), a project that marked the beginning of her career as a gospel artist. However, shortly after recording, illness struck, and Mmathapelo was unable to promote her album or continue her career as planned. Though the music industry was forced to wait for her return, her personal life blossomed. During those years of healing, Mmathapelo was blessed with a supportive marriage and the joy of raising five sons.

Now, after years of putting her passion on hold, Mmathapelo has reignited her love for gospel music. With renewed ambition, she is ready to build a lasting legacy as a gospel artist. Her journey has taught her resilience, and with the support of Dezrykay Trading—a digital company helping her with branding and marketing—she is poised to make her mark on the industry.

Alongside her music career, Mmathapelo is a multifaceted professional. She is currently the Company Content Manager at Dezrykay Trading, where she oversees content creation and branding strategies. In addition to this role, she is a radio host on Mogau Radio (Lethabo La Batho), a community station in Polokwane. Balancing her role as a radio personality with her gospel music career, Mmathapelo continues to be a powerful voice in both her community and the music industry.

Fun Fact: Mmathapelo is the daughter of legendary kwasa-kwasa artist Mama Winnie and the sister of rapper and media personality Dezry Kay, as well as Daniel Kekana. This rich musical heritage continues to influence her journey as an artist.

Mmathapelo Mojela’s story is one of perseverance, faith, and unwavering dedication to her calling. As she steps back into the music scene, she is determined to inspire others with her story, her prayers, and her music, touching hearts with the message of hope and the love of Christ.
