South Africa’s Own Tyla Wins Grammy

On Sunday, Tyla, the renowned South African vocalist, clinched a Grammy in the Best African Music Performance category.

The accolade was bestowed upon the artist for her globally acclaimed afropiano and R&B track titled “Water,” which has achieved widespread recognition and garnered numerous accomplishments.

Tyla graciously accepted her award during the premiere ceremony of the 66th Annual Grammy Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. This preliminary event precedes the main ceremony and is where a substantial number of awards are presented.

“If you don’t know me, my name is Tyla. I’m from South Africa and last year God decided to change my whole life, so thank you so much to God. Thank you to my team, my family; I know my mother’s crying somewhere in here.”

Tyla emerged victorious over fellow African luminaries, surpassing contenders such as Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, ASAKE & Olamide, and Davido in collaboration with South African artist Musa Keys.

Did you know? For the first time in 55 years, a solo track by a South African artist secured a spot on the chart, marking a milestone since Hugh Masekela’s “Grazing in the Grass.”
